A teenage boy has admitted that he stabbed his girlfriend to death.
Appearing in court, Steven Miles pleaded guilty to the murder of Elizabeth Thomas. Today would have been the A-level student’s 18th birthday. Her body was found at Miles’ family home in Surrey on January 24 – and friends claim that she was planning to break up with him at the time.
Miles, who suffers from mixed personality disorder and Asperger’s syndrome, was detained under the Mental Health Act the same day.
Lewis Power, defending the 17-year-old at Guildford crown court, described the case ‘as very difficult, complex and unique’.
The schoolboy, who studied at Oxted School sixth form, will be sentenced next month.
Judge Christopher Critchlow said: ‘You have pleaded guilty to the gravest crime and you are only 17 years of age. You will be given credit for the fact you have owned up to what you did.’
In a statement released shortly after Elizabeth’s death, her family wrote: ‘Elizabeth was a kind, caring, loving and gentle girl and her death has left our lives broken beyond repair, we have lost our Sunday child.
‘Throughout her GCSEs, Elizabeth studied hard and did very well. She was now working towards her A-levels and we were all extremely proud of what she had achieved.’
Miles has been remanded in custody until October 2.
