The Italian Navy and Coast Guard has rescued as many as 4,000 migrants in the past 48 hours in waters off Sicily and Calabria, north of the Libyan coast.

Italy aims to end search and rescue missions to locate migrants, saying it is unable to continue the burden of rescuing the thousands from the seas.
